The 'Back Mountain' is the area west of the Wilkes-Barre Mountain ridge in western Luzerne County, separated from the Wyoming Valley by a prominent ridge. It's considered the most upscale residential area in the Wilkes-Barre metro, with the Dallas School District and Lake-Lehman School District among the strongest in Luzerne County. Anchored by Dallas (borough and township), Shavertown (the Back Mountain's main commercial village), Trucksville, Harveys Lake (a borough on the largest natural lake in Pennsylvania), Lehman Township, Jackson Township, Kingston Township, Franklin Township, and the small Back Mountain villages. The region transitions from suburban Dallas to rural Endless Mountains country further west and north.
