The outer towns of Rutland County, including the ski country and the Lakes Region. **Killington** is home to **Killington Ski Resort** — the largest ski resort in the eastern United States, nicknamed 'The Beast of the East,' with 155 trails across 6 mountains. Killington hosts an annual FIS Alpine Ski World Cup stop. The region also includes **Pico Mountain** (a smaller ski resort adjacent to Killington), **Castleton** (home of **Castleton University** — a Vermont State College, now part of Vermont State University, on the shores of Lake Bomoseen), **Fair Haven** (a historic slate-quarrying town on the NY border), **Poultney** (former home of Green Mountain College, which closed in 2019), **Wells VT** (on Lake St. Catherine), **Pawlet**, **Wallingford**, **Danby**, **Mount Holly**, **Shrewsbury**, **Middletown Springs**, **Hubbardton** (site of the 1777 Battle of Hubbardton, Vermont's only Revolutionary War battle), **Sudbury VT**, **Benson**, **Ira**, **Tinmouth**, and **Mount Tabor**.
