The urban core of the metro, centered on the City of Providence and its densest surrounding cities. Providence contains the Rhode Island State House, Brown University, the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Providence College, Johnson & Wales University's main campus, the Rhode Island Hospital/Lifespan medical complex, the Waterplace Park and Providence River waterfront, the historic College Hill neighborhood (with Benefit Street's 'Mile of History'), the Federal Hill Italian-American district, Downcity, the Jewelry District, Olneyville, Fox Point, Federal Hill, Smith Hill, Mount Hope, and the South Side neighborhoods. The region also includes Cranston (the 3rd-largest RI city, on the Pawtuxet River), East Providence (across the Seekonk River), North Providence, and Johnston RI.
