Mon Valley — McKeesport, Homestead & Braddock
PA-837 / PA-48 / I-376 East / Rankin Bridge
The Monongahela River valley southeast of Pittsburgh — the historic heart of America's 19th- and 20th-century steel industry. Anchored by McKeesport (once one of the largest cities in PA, home of the former National Tube Works of U.S. Steel), Homestead (site of the 1892 Homestead Strike and now home to The Waterfront — a major retail/entertainment complex built on the former Homestead Steel Works site), Duquesne, Braddock (site of Andrew Carnegie's first steel mill, the Edgar Thomson Works, still operating as U.S. Steel), Clairton (home to U.S. Steel's Clairton Works — the largest coke manufacturing facility in North America), West Mifflin (home to Kennywood Park — one of the oldest operating amusement parks in the US), Glassport, Munhall, Port Vue, White Oak, North Braddock, Rankin, Swissvale, and Turtle Creek. The Mon Valley remains an economically challenged area but has seen significant arts and food scene revival, especially in Braddock and Homestead.
