Fayette & Armstrong — Uniontown, Kittanning & Outer Counties
US-40 / US-119 / US-422 / PA-28 / PA-66
The two outlying counties of the Pittsburgh metro. **Fayette County** is to the south and includes Uniontown (the county seat, birthplace of General George Marshall of the Marshall Plan), Connellsville (once the 'Coke Capital of the World' for its steel-making beehive coke ovens), Brownsville, Masontown, Point Marion, Fairchance, and the Ohiopyle State Park / Fallingwater area at the edge of the Laurel Highlands. **Armstrong County** is to the northeast along the Allegheny River and includes Kittanning (the county seat), Ford City, Leechburg, Apollo, Freeport, and Parker (Pennsylvania's smallest city by population). These two counties are the most rural portions of the Pittsburgh MSA and are characterized by historic coal, coke, and iron industries giving way to small-town retail and Marcellus/Utica shale gas activity.
