Dark-sky desert town built around a 560-ft fountain
Fountain Hills is the master-planned town east of the McDowell Mountains that was literally built around a fountain -- when activated in 1970 its ~560-ft plume was the tallest man-made fountain in the world, a record it held into the 1980s. It still plays for 15 minutes at the top of every hour over a 29-acre lake at the center of town. In 2018 Fountain Hills became the 17th International Dark Sky Community worldwide, and a town-wide lighting ordinance keeps the Milky Way visible on clear nights. Separated from the rest of metro Phoenix by the McDowell Mountains, the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation reservation, and Tonto National Forest, it trades urban connectivity for trail access, quiet, and dramatic Sonoran Desert scenery.
No Valley Metro Rail service; a private vehicle is effectively required. Town lighting ordinance restricts outdoor fixtures to preserve Dark Sky status. Summer highs routinely exceed 100°F from June through September.
Schools
Fountain Hills Unified School District (FHUSD) serves the entire town: Niche B+, ranked #27 in Arizona (2025). Single-district means consistent boundaries -- verify enrollment eligibility by address.
Grocery
Safeway, Bashas', and a Fry's Marketplace cover everyday grocery within the town; Target, Trader Joe's, and Whole Foods are a 15-20 minute drive west into North Scottsdale.
Parks
Fountain Park anchors the town center with the 15-minute-per-hour fountain show; McDowell Mountain Regional Park (21,099 acres) and the Fountain Hills McDowell Mountain Preserve give direct foot and wheel access into Sonoran Desert backcountry. Desert Vista includes one of the Valley's better off-leash dog parks.
