Oak Ridge & Western Corridor

Oak Ridge / I-40 W

The communities west and northwest of Knoxville anchored by the historically significant city of Oak Ridge (pop. 31,400) in Anderson and Roane counties. Built as a 'Secret City' during the Manhattan Project in 1942, Oak Ridge is now home to Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the Y-12 National Security Complex, and a concentration of science and technology employers. Clinton (pop. 10,100), the Anderson County seat, sits along the Clinch River at the I-75 corridor. Farther west in Roane County, Kingston (pop. 6,000), Harriman (pop. 5,900), and Rockwood (pop. 5,400) form the I-40 western corridor along the Emory River and Watts Bar Lake. Lenoir City (pop. 10,100) and Loudon (pop. 6,000) in Loudon County bridge the gap between Farragut and the western communities along I-75/I-40.
