The outer Kansas counties of the Kansas City MSA: Leavenworth (north, home to Fort Leavenworth — the Army's Command and General Staff College — and Leavenworth, the county seat), Miami (south, anchored by Paola and Louisburg), Linn (south), and Franklin (southwest, anchored by Ottawa — home of Ottawa University). Fort Leavenworth is the oldest active military fort west of the Mississippi River.
