Middlesex County stretches south from Hartford along the lower Connecticut River to Long Island Sound. Anchored by Middletown (the largest Middlesex Co. city, home to Wesleyan University — one of the original 'Little Three' highly selective liberal arts colleges — and the Connecticut Valley Hospital), Cromwell, Portland, East Hampton, the historic Connecticut River shoreline towns of Essex (the Connecticut River Museum, Essex Steam Train), Old Saybrook (at the mouth of the Connecticut River, home of Katharine Hepburn's longtime residence at Fenwick), Clinton (Outlet stores), Westbrook, Chester, Deep River, Haddam, East Haddam (home of the 1877 Goodspeed Opera House), Durham, Middlefield, and Killingworth. The region is one of the most scenic riverfront areas in New England.
