The immediate eastern suburbs of Hartford on the east bank of the Connecticut River. Anchored by East Hartford (home to the Pratt & Whitney aerospace engine plant — one of the largest employers in Connecticut and a global leader in commercial and military jet engines) and Manchester (the 'Silk City,' historically a center for silk ribbon production, now the site of the Manchester Shopping Parkade and the Buckland Hills Mall). The region also includes Glastonbury (a wealthy suburb along the Connecticut River), South Windsor (on the Connecticut River), Wethersfield (home of the Webb-Deane-Stevens Museum in one of the oldest continuously-inhabited English settlements in Connecticut, founded 1634), Rocky Hill, and Newington.
