Carpenter is an unincorporated community of roughly 97 residents in southeastern Laramie County, about 30 miles from downtown Cheyenne via Wyoming Highway 214. Founded in 1907 as a rail stop on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, the community was developed by James R. Carpenter's Federal Land Company, which opened 146,000 acres of land to settlers. Today it remains a rural ranching and dryland farming area with Carpenter Elementary School (K-6) as its primary institutional anchor.
