The northern counties of the Burlington metro, stretching from Franklin County along the Quebec border down to the Lake Champlain islands of Grand Isle County. Anchored by **St. Albans** (the city, population ~6,900, Franklin County seat — home to the historic 1864 **St. Albans Raid**, the northernmost land action of the American Civil War, when Confederate cavalry robbed the city's banks and escaped to Canada). The region also includes **St. Albans Town** (the larger surrounding municipality), **Swanton**, **Georgia VT**, **Fairfax**, **Fairfield VT**, **Sheldon**, **Franklin VT** (the town), **Highgate** (Canadian border crossing at Highgate Springs), **Enosburgh**, **Montgomery**, **Richford**, **Bakersfield**, and **Berkshire**. **Grand Isle County** is the Lake Champlain Islands — **South Hero**, **North Hero**, **Grand Isle**, **Isle La Motte**, and **Alburgh** (on a peninsula connected to the mainland via Alburgh) — a chain of islands in Lake Champlain connected by bridges along US-2.
