The urban core of the metro on the east shore of Lake Champlain. **Burlington** is Vermont's largest city (pop. ~44,700) and the state's cultural and economic hub — home to the **University of Vermont (UVM)** — Vermont's flagship public university, founded 1791, with ~14,000 students — plus **Champlain College**, **Fletcher Allen Health Care / UVM Medical Center** (Vermont's largest hospital), the **Church Street Marketplace** (a pedestrian-only historic main street, one of the most successful downtown revitalization projects in America), **Waterfront Park**, the **ECHO Leahy Center for Lake Champlain** (science center), the **Flynn Center for the Performing Arts**, and historic neighborhoods from the Hill Section to the Old North End to the New North End. **South Burlington** (pop. ~20,300) is the largest suburban city, home to the University Mall, Burlington International Airport, the VT National Guard headquarters, and significant commercial and residential growth.
