South & Southeast Bakersfield

The southern and southeastern fringe of the Bakersfield urbanized area, extending into the agricultural flatlands toward the Tehachapi foothills. Lamont (pop ~14,000) and Arvin (pop ~19,500) are the largest communities — both predominantly Latino agricultural towns with affordable housing. Weedpatch (pop ~2,200) is a small CDP with Dust Bowl heritage (the Weedpatch Camp/Arvin Federal Migratory Camp made famous by The Grapes of Wrath). Greenfield (pop ~3,400) sits along the southern edge of Bakersfield's city limits. This region has the lowest housing costs in the metro but longer commutes to central employment.
