US-209 / PA-903 / PA-309 / I-476 PA Tpk NE Ext
Carbon County sits in the Pocono foothills northwest of the Lehigh Valley proper. Anchored by Jim Thorpe (the historic 19th-century Lehigh Gorge town renamed in 1954 after the Native American Olympic gold medalist, whose remains are interred there — a major Pennsylvania tourism destination known for its Victorian Broadway commercial district, the Lehigh Gorge State Park whitewater rafting, and the historic Mauch Chunk Switchback Railroad), Lehighton (the largest Carbon Co. town), Palmerton (a former zinc-smelting town), Weatherly, Nesquehoning, Lansford, Summit Hill, and the small coal-patch towns of the Panther Valley. The region is in the transitional zone between the Lehigh Valley and the Poconos.
